A big following might get you noticed, but it isn't necessarily what gets you the collaboration. Here's what hotels are really looking for when deciding which content creators to work with.

The world of hotel and travel collaborations has changed - a few years ago, a large Instagram following could be enough to get a creator through the door. Today, hotels are becoming much more considered about who they partner with and follower count is just one small part of the picture. For creators, this is good news!

Whether you're an established travel influencer, a smaller niche creator or someone specialising in UGC, there are plenty of ways to make yourself attractive to hotels without having hundreds of thousands of followers.

So, what actually matters?

1. Content quality comes first

Before looking too closely at your numbers, a hotel is likely to look at your content.

Think about it from their perspective. If they're offering a complimentary stay, experience or other benefits in exchange for content, they need to be able to picture that content representing their property.

They'll be looking at things like:

The quality of your photography and video

How well you edit short-form content

Your storytelling

Whether your content feels authentic rather than overly staged

How you showcase hotels, destinations, food and experiences

The overall look and consistency of your channels

You don't necessarily need expensive camera equipment. Some of the best-performing travel content is shot entirely on a smartphone.

What matters is whether you can make somebody watching think: I want to go there.

2. Relevance can matter more than reach

Imagine you're a boutique adults-only hotel in Santorini. Would you rather work with a creator with 200,000 followers whose content is predominantly gaming and technology, or a travel creator with 20,000 followers whose audience actively follows them for European escapes and boutique hotel recommendations?

For hotels, the second creator would be far more valuable. Hotels aren't simply looking for the largest possible audience. They're looking for the right audience.

Your niche, typical destinations, audience demographics and style of travel can all influence whether you're a natural fit for a property.

This is why having a clearly defined creator identity can be an advantage.

3. Engagement tells a much bigger story than follower count

Follower numbers are easy to see - influence is harder to measure.

Hotels may look beyond your headline following and consider whether people actually interact with your content. Are people:

Commenting on your recommendations?

Saving your travel guides?

Sharing your Reels?

Asking where you stayed?

A smaller but genuinely engaged community can be extremely valuable.

Hotels increasingly want collaborations that generate more than a nice photograph. They want content that inspires interest, consideration and, ultimately, bookings.

4. Your previous travel content matters

You don't necessarily need a portfolio filled with luxury hotel partnerships before approaching your first hotel, but having relevant content helps.

If you want to work with hotels, start showing that you know how to create great hotel and travel content - even when you're paying for the trip yourself.

Create room tours

Film destination guides

Review restaurants

Capture beautiful hotel details

Talk about your experience

Show the breakfast, pool, view and surrounding neighbourhood.

You're effectively giving future partners a preview of what you could create for them. If a hotel can immediately imagine its property appearing on your feed, you've made its decision much easier.

5. Professionalism can make or break a collaboration

Being a great creator is only one half of a successful partnership.

Hotels need creators they can rely on. That means communicating clearly, agreeing deliverables in advance, arriving when you've said you will and delivering the agreed content within the expected timeframe.

Remember that a hosted stay has a real cost to the business. A hotel may be giving up a room it could otherwise sell, alongside staff time, meals, experiences or other extras.

Treating the collaboration as a professional partnership, rather than simply a free stay, goes a very long way.

And in an industry where hotel teams and hospitality groups talk to one another, being easy to work with can be just as valuable as having impressive analytics.

6. A clear proposal makes a difference

One of the biggest mistakes creators make when approaching hotels is focusing entirely on what they'd like to receive.

Instead of: "I'd love a complimentary two-night stay", think about what you're offering in return.

A strong collaboration proposal should make it easy for the hotel to understand:

Who you are

What kind of content you create

Who your audience is

Why you're a good fit for their property

What content you're proposing to create

When you're planning to visit

What the hotel will receive from the partnership

Specificity makes you look prepared - and saves the hotel's marketing team from having to work out the collaboration for you.

7. Different hotels want different things

There isn't one perfect travel creator - a five-star resort might prioritise beautifully produced aspirational content.

A hostel could prefer energetic TikTok videos showing its social atmosphere.

A family resort may want creators who can demonstrate what staying there with children is actually like.

A boutique property might value distinctive photography that captures its design.

And some hotels aren't primarily interested in your audience at all. They may be looking for UGC creators who can produce high-quality assets for the hotel's own social channels and marketing.

Understanding what the property needs is one of the most useful things you can do before proposing a collaboration.

8. Authenticity still matters

Travel audiences are increasingly accustomed to sponsored content, gifted stays and creator partnerships, which makes genuine recommendations even more important.

Hotels aren't necessarily looking for creators who make every destination sound perfect. They're looking for people whose recommendations their audience trusts.

Your personality, perspective and individual style are part of the value you bring.

The strongest travel collaborations shouldn't feel like traditional advertising. They should feel like your content - just with a great hotel at the centre of the story.

So, do follower numbers matter?

Yes - but they're not the whole story.

Reach can absolutely make a creator more attractive to a hotel, particularly when a campaign is focused on awareness. But follower count sits alongside a much bigger combination of factors.

Content quality + audience fit + engagement + professionalism + a strong proposal is much more compelling than follower count alone, and that's an important shift for the creator economy in 2026.

It means there isn't one number you need to reach before you're suddenly "big enough" to start pursuing travel collaborations.

Instead, focus on becoming the kind of creator a hotel would genuinely want representing its brand.

What Hotels Actually Look for When Choosing Content Creators

The creator economy has rapidly changed the way the travel industry approaches marketing. Hotels, resorts, boutique accommodation and tourism businesses are increasingly collaborating with influencers and UGC creators to build trust, showcase experiences and inspire travellers through authentic content.

At CollabAway, we've seen this shift first-hand. With travel brands across more than 70 countries joining our platform to connect with creators, we've gained valuable insight into where collaboration opportunities are growing fastest and which destinations are embracing creator marketing the most. Combined with wider trends in influencer marketing, digital nomad communities and the global creator economy, here are some of the best countries for content creators in 2026.

How we chose these countries

There isn't currently a single global ranking that measures how welcoming countries are to content creators and influencer marketing, so we looked into a range of factors to come up with these results.

These factors include:

The number of hospitality businesses joining CollabAway to collaborate with creators worldwide

How widely influencer marketing has been adopted by hotels and tourism businesses in a particular country

The strength and maturity of the local creator economy

Digital nomad infrastructure and remote working culture

The variety of travel, hospitality and lifestyle content opportunities available

1. Indonesia

If there's one destination that has become known for it’s creator economy, it's Indonesia, particularly Bali!

Bali has evolved into one of the world's biggest hubs for travel creators, digital nomads and remote entrepreneurs. From luxury jungle villas and beachfront resorts to boutique cafés and wellness retreats, creator collaborations have become a familiar part of the tourism industry.

This is reflected in our own platform too. Indonesia currently has more hospitality businesses on CollabAway than any other country, highlighting just how actively hotels and accommodation providers are seeking creator partnerships.

Beyond Bali, destinations like Lombok, Nusa Penida and Komodo National Park continue to offer incredible opportunities for creators looking to produce standout travel content.

Top tips for landing more collaborations abroad

Choosing the right destination is only part of the equation. To maximise your chances of securing collaborations while travelling:

Build a professional portfolio showcasing your best photography, video and previous collaborations.

Tailor every pitch to the property rather than sending generic outreach messages.

Plan ahead, but stay flexible. Contact hotels well before your trip, especially during peak travel periods. If your dates are flexible, you'll often have a better chance of securing a collaboration during the low season or when a property has more availability.

Focus on destinations where hospitality businesses already understand creator marketing.

Clearly explain the value you'll deliver, whether that's UGC, social media content or exposure to your audience.

Join platforms like CollabAway that connect creators with hospitality businesses already looking for collaborations, helping you spend less time on cold outreach and more time creating.

The creator and influencer economy has made it easier than ever to turn a passion for travel into meaningful collaborations.

While opportunities now exist around the world, some countries have embraced creator marketing more quickly than others. These destinations combine thriving tourism industries, growing creator communities and hospitality businesses that increasingly recognise the value of authentic content. As we continue to see new hotels and tourism businesses join the CollabAway platform every month, one thing is clear: creator collaborations are no longer a trend - they're becoming an established part of modern travel marketing.

Whether you're planning your trip to build your portfolio or find your next hotel collab, choosing the right destination can open the door to even more exciting opportunities and unforgettable experiences.
